Finishing up

Zero to Hero DAY 26: GO MINING FOR IDEAS, AND START SOME DRAFTS

For this one I have created two drafts containing titles only. One is called “Crafty”, the other is “The hoop as a metaphor.”  I wonder how long these two will remain untouched?

DAY 27: REVISIT A TASK AND A POST

For this one, I’m going to endeavor to keep up with the Phoneography Challenge.  That’s the challenge I found in response to one of the Zero to Hero days. The first Monday of the month is coming up, and the  subject is nature.

DAY 28: BUILD ON YOUR POPULAR CONTENT

My post, “To Knit or not to knit ,” was fairly popular. My plan for building on it is to start a regular crafting feature.  That also ties into my “Craft y” draft.

DAY 29: CREATE AN EDITORIAL CALENDAR

This one makes me nervous.  Having a calendar would obligate me to post regularly wouldn’t it?  I’ll have to mull the idea over for a few weeks. For now, I will mention some of the ideas for features I’ve come up with.

  • Crafty stuff
  • What I’m loving on Pinterest
  • Art Journal Day
  • Look what I found! (This will maybe allow me to discontinue my blog with the same name).
  • Things I See (This can replace the photo blog that I haven’t been keeping up with).
  • Just a List

I’ll flesh these out as I start thinking about the calendar.

DAY 30: THINK BIG PICTURE

Before I can think about extending  my “brand,” and promoting my online presence, I have to think about who I really want to be online. I have to narrow my focus because as it stands, I’m trying to do too much.  I’m getting overwhelmed. When I  get overwhelmed I don’t do anything.

If this blog is really a way for me to document my life then I don’t need to be a brand. I just need to be me.

So for the next 30 days, I’ll be taking some small strides. The first thing I need to tackle is my resistance to getting up early.

Now, I’m going to have some ice cream.

My own terms

I’m two three days behind on Zero  to Hero, but I’m not going to beat myself up. In fact, I’ve decided to do the rest of them on my own time, or maybe not at all.

Instead of doing  Monday’s, Tuesday’s,  and today’s assignments, I made something with an image from the Flickr Commons.

A day behind

I was too pooped to bother with this one yesterday.

ZERO  TO HERO DAY 24: VISIT OTHER PARTICIPANTS IN THE NEW EVENT YOU JOINED

The task: visit five other participants in the event your chose on Day 22. Leave at least two comments.

I tried to comment on a photo of a lovely cat on blogagaini, but there were technical difficulties. I  complimented a pretty close up shot of a dandelion in its seed stage on Something to Ponder About, and I gave a “like” to the photo of a strange skeleton in a blue veil on AngelineM’s Blog.

Moving on to Day 25.

DAY 25: ADAPT A CUSTOM DETAIL FOR YOUR BLOG

The task: Browse the blogs you follow and note a custom touch you love. Tell the blogger you love it, and interpret it for your own blog.

For this one, I took the suggestion of looking at a blog called With the Grains, and noting the drawings the blogger uses to represent her social media presence. I like them a lot, and left a comment to that effect. I’m glad I found this blog, because it’s about baking (a topic that interests me), and the design is very nice.

Here’s a sample of these great drawings.

Too many blogs

Zero to Hero Day 20: Add a New Page

I considered not doing this one because I don’t think I need another page. As I don’t get many comments, I don’t need a “commenting guidelines” page.  A site index might be nice, but I don’t have time to learn how to make one. How about links to my other blogs? That’s sort of good idea. Having such a page, might encourage me to start posting to those other blogs. Time will tell.

You know you  have too many blogs when you only have time to post to one of them.

Doubling up

I missed yesterday’s Zero to Hero assignment, so I’m doubling up  today. I kind of feel like I could get in trouble for not turning in my homework. Does WordPress give out demerits?

DAY 17: INCREASE YOUR COMMENTING CONFIDENCE

“Today’s assignment: read six posts written in response to yesterday’s prompt, and leave comments on at least two of them.”

My heart wasn’t in this one so much. I commented on three posts, I think. I read a few more, but nothing I saw really inspired me  to comment.  The prompt, in my opinion, was kind of blah. Maybe I should challenge myself to go back to this prompt one day and do something great  with it . It might make a good jumping off point for a piece of fiction.

DAY 18: ACTIVATE A SOCIAL NETWORK

“Today’s assignment: Explore one or more social networks, and start an account so you can begin exploring the possibilities. If you’re already active on a social network, set up Publicize and link the account to your blog, and/or create a strategy for how you’ll use it.”

I’m all over social media. You can find out where on this page. I have a Tumblr for my digital scrapbooking pages, but I haven’t been active in that realm for some time. I’m on Instagram, Flickr, Google +, Vine. I joined Quora, but never really spent any time with it. I’m sure there are more that I’m just not  thinking of.  I think its too much. I should really cut down, but I would hate to not be in on the next big thing. I’ve yet to try Snapchat, but it’s probably just a matter of time.

I coordinate the social media presence for my department at work, so I’m often looking for articles on how to make the best use of these channels. I take most of the information with a grain of salt, because I don’t think any of the so-called experts really know what they’re talking about. I think we’re all just taking stabs in the dark and trying to keep up with the ever changing landscape of this Internet business.

So I’m a bit burned out with the Zero to Hero thing. I’m learning a lot and pushing myself to do things I don’t normally do with my blog, but I’m ready to be done with it.

I’ve got ice cream!

My reputation

ZERO TO HERO DAY 16: MAKE A WRITING PROMPT YOUR OWN

The prompt: Do you have a reputation? What is it, and where did it come from? Is it accurate? What do you think about it?

It’s difficult to think of myself as having a reputation. I hear the word reputation when people are talking about someone well known for doing something. I don’t think I’m enough of a celebrity to be well known for something. I am not a celebrity at all, in fact.

I know I don’t have a bad reputation. I do my work. I honor my commitments. I’m polite and friendly. I don’t cause trouble. I sound pretty boring don’t I?

If I’m known for anything at work, it’s for my skill at creating training videos and doing voice-overs. That’s a good thing because people keep asking me to make these videos.

Many people know that I’m a dancer. They tend to ask me if I’m still dancing. Do they think I shouldn’t be because I’m too old to dance?  Am I reading too much into this question?

One day I would like to have a reputation for being a “thought leader” in some niche field. This should lead to me getting paid to blog. I guess that’s one of reasons why I keep plugging away.

The look of things

ZERO TO HERO DAY 15: LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW VISUALS INFLUENCE CONTENT

The assignment is to use the Customizer to try out new fonts and colors.

I’m not sure if it’s worth the $30.00 to get the customizing features, but here’s a look at some of the previews.
